父親が帰ってきました！

お久しぶりです。
いよいよ父親がパナマから帰ってきました。僕が日本へ行ったきり会ってないです。それは二年間っていうことです。たぶんあと３ヶ月ぐらい両親またパナマに行くので、できるだけこの時期を大切にします。
僕が日本に行く前に、まだ少年でした。日本でいろんなことを経験してきて、帰国して、就職しました。なんとなく男になった気分がします。鏡を見れば、お父さんの顔が見えるし、自分んの顔が見える。ホンマに大人になってる信じられないけど、もっと自分なりの感覚で生きてる。
だからこの３ヶ月お父さんとお母さんと一緒に大切にしたいって思っています。
あとで一人で生きていく。ホンマに全ては自分次第です。
次はどこなんでしょうか？

Home Sick

It's been about 5 months since I've left Japan.
All I can say is I miss Japan.
I find myself comparing everything to where I was in Kobe, Japan.
I miss being able to ride my bike.
I miss taking the train, especially to Osaka :)
I miss walking to wherever I needed to go.

I love my current job, and because I get to work from home, I wish I was able to go to Japan and just work from there when I have long periods where I have to work from home like this.

The benefits of public transportation were a big plus for me. I don't like driving much.
So for example, now anywhere I need to go takes at least 30 min. by car. Not cool.
I can go from Sannomiya to Umeda in that time!! And I don't have to drive!

I don't physically like working at home, so trying to find a cafe or somewhere with wi-fi is pain since everything is so far apart. My adjustment time is going to double because of this, because all I think about everyday is Japan. All I think about how easy it was from my apartment in Shinkobe to go to Sannomiya and find some cool cafe to just sit and chill in.

I'll just ride it out.

I miss Kobe.

I miss Osaka.

I've got to get back soon.

I miss Japan.

I'm home sick.

Direction of Blog

Now that I'm not in Japan anymore, I guess I will have to change the direction of the blog a little. Initially, I only made this so that my family and friends could keep up with what I'm doing in Japan. My family is spread out, I can say, "around the world," so it still is a good tool to keep them updated. Also, since I will be working soon, I'm not sure how much time I will have to update. I do however, want a space online where I can share some of my goals, progress, and travel. Therefore, I will try and occassionally update my blog to show which language I'm working on next, and where my travels happen to take me next. I'm not sure how much Japan-related content will be here, but there will probably be a little bit of everything.

It has been a while since I have written on my blog. After returning from Japan, I used the time to concentrate on my job search. Also, I've been trying to decide which language I would like to learn next. For a few weeks, I tried transitioning into Spanish, but for some reason I keep going back to Japanese. Although while learning Japanese, I got to a level where I can say I'm proficient, I still feel there is a lot for me to learn. There is still a lot that I want to learn. I've been able to speak with a few friends in Japan through Skype and e-mail occasionally, but I wouldn't mind meeting people that I could meet up with to speak Japanese outside of Japan in real life.

I still have the desire to learn another language and for some reason I'm gravitating towards German right now for various reasons. One, I know that I can always speak to my sister in German, and two I've found some cool media that I enjoy. While spending a few summers in Germany, I used to watchFamily Matters and Fresh Prince in German. These are the first few tools that I have gathered for my new quest. For some reason I'm having trouble finding media in Spanish that I like, besides books. I really need some good movies and tv shows if I want to get that project started, so for now I'm postponing that project.

In the mean time, I've been spending time in Jamaica, gathering my thoughts and planning my next set of goals and adventures. I'm giving myself about a month break from doing any language learning, so that I can approach German with the same hunger I did with the Japanese. Also, I have a few J-drama's I want to finish up when I return from my hiatus, including "Rebound" and "Shiawase ni Narou yo!"

My next project will consist of me still learning Japanese, while trying to learn German from scratch, (and maybe Spanish). I've been lining up my materials to purchase, and am excited about this project!! It will be interesting as I do this while I work, but I realized having a lot of free time has sometimes worked against me because I don't do as much, as when I'm busy. When I'm busy, it's like I'm some kind of machine, pumping in the input every sweet second that I can get a chance.

I will enjoy my time to relax though. From July 2009 to about May 2011 I went hard with the Japanese learning, and I saw the fruits of my labor everyday! It's nothing to take a month off and then go back at it.

The only thing I'm doing now is reading a few novels. The one I'm reading in Japanese is call "Confessions" or "Kokuhaku". I watched the movie while I was in Japan. It was dark, but for some reason I liked it, and had to get the book. I'm also reading some books by Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Paulo Coelho.

I'll be in Kingston for a few more weeks so just shoot me a mail if you're here too.

Chehon at Weddy Weddy

So I'm chillin at Weddy Weddy Wednesday's last night, and I see someone who I think is Chehon. For those that don't know, Chehon is my favorite Japanese reggae artiste. A lot of his songs helped me to learn Japanese, because of their good melodies and good messages. He's probably the best in Japan right now.

I think he came to Jamaica around the same time I went to Japan, so he's been here for a while.

On my way out, I just stopped and talked with him for minute. It was cool to meet him, and of all places in Jamaica. I didn't have my camera, so no pictures, but I'm sure I'll see him around on the music scene.

Leaving Japan was a hard decision for me. I decided to leave about a month ago because I felt the opportunities to use my Japanese would be more valuable abroad, and the opportunities abroad would able to provide more growth. One of these days I do plan on going back. I'm still studying Japanese, but would now like to broaden my wings and study Spanish and Chinese and my IT stuff so I can get a good job!
After a year of studying in Japan I feel like I have seen a lot of growth when it comes to my studies and just me as a person. I met a lot of great people at my school, outside on the streets, Jamdung, everywhere.
I didn't want to leave Japan, but I'm ready to go where ever my path leads me.

This was really a once in a lifetime experience. I feel like I had a very unique experience and will never forget it or the people that I met along the way.

I know that it has been a while since I have put up a post, but a lot has been going on. I decided to leave Japan, but even before the Tohoku Disaster happened. Where I was in Kobe, Japan, was not at all affected by anything that happened or that is happening as far as the disaster. We still had to go to school, and everyone had to go to work. As far as I know, Kansai was ok. A lot of people from the Tohoku region are going to Kansai and other parts of Japan that were not affected by the disaster.

Actually a friend in New York Skyped me and told me what was going on the day of the earthquake. I did not have a tv in my room so I was clueless at the time. Even when there have been earthquakes in Kobe during the past year, I did not feel one.

As far as I was concerned, I was not afraid of the earthquake or tsunami if they were to come because there would be nothing I could have done. On the other hand, I think a lot more people, including my roommates and I were afraid of the radiation. My heart goes out to those that were in the Tohoku region.

2010, Taking Chances Pt.2 No Regrets

It's not over until it's over, but I may not want to write anything in the last moments...lol So I'll write them at the year end and keep moving forward.

Since I've been here, up until now, I have no regrets. Everyday I'm learning so naturally I did things out of my character at times, I made plenty of mistakes, but it's all part of the learning/growth process. I also learned valuable lessons, and met people that I hope I can keep in contact with no matter where we end up in this world.

I haven't really been too detailed on my blog. Usually I just wrote about what I did during the week and my ambitions. I really didn't want to write a lot because I would say I'm a very extreme or intense person, so I didn't really want to share too much of my inner thoughts, even though it may have made the blog more interesting. A lot of my stubbornness and "intensiveness" created a lot of motivation for myself, but it could have also been a set back during my adventure because it could prevent me from meeting people, or from seeing other methods to my goal. The good thing about me being stubborn was I never wanted to stop learning even if it meant making mistakes until I got what I wanted to learn right.

Also, I feel like I should share more of my background just so you get a better idea of where I'm coming from. My background and past experiences/travels have definitely shaped a lot of my decisions and my perspective on a lot of things here in Japan. Maybe I will write about that more in a later post.

The only thing I hope I didn't interfere with too much is my parent's dreams as well. I wish I could repay them everything so that their dreams could come true as well without too many problems. My parents always back me 100% in everything I do, whether I fail or succeed, but this is something huge that I could not have done without them at all.

No matter where I end up, I'm never giving up, and I'm going to put everything I've got into everything I do as usual until I succeed. Always aim high! Some say my expectations and my goals are too high, but nothing feels better than reaching those goals even if it takes a long time, reaching smaller goals in the mean time, so keep going!

2010, Taking Chances Pt.1 Job Hunt

As the year winds down, I can truly take this time to reflect on 2010's happenings. 2010 was definitely a year of taking chances for myself and also my family. We don't know how things will turn out, but we are all taking chances, chasing our dreams.

I initially started out my language program planning to study here for two years. two years probably would've been just enough time for me to not only excel in Japanese, but also to find a job here in Japan doing something in IT or business. After a few months, two years turned into one year because I realized how fast the money was going, not even mentioning living expenses.

Probably the first few months I really devoted to mainly just studying. Once I got settled, I wanted to venture and experience the place, because I was coming to the realization that this may be my only chance to have this experience, and I didn't know what was next in store. So I played hard, I studied hard, and I began my job search.

Despite not feeling like my Japanese was "ready", I still look for jobs because I felt like that was the way I would improve as I prepared for interviews and polished up my resumes. The way I see it, the economy is basically the same everywhere so the fact the Japanese economy was bad didn't deter me, I felt like I would get the same results anywhere, besides the language barrier, that I'm slowly knocking down. Just to be safe, I've been applying to companies in America, England, and Japan. I can legally work in American and Great Britain why I focused mainly on those countries outside of Japan. To sum everything up, I had a few interviews for great full time positions in America and Japan, but unfortunately I didn't get the jobs possibly because of my location or my current skill set.

I still have three more months to wait for replies and see what else is out there, but if all else fails, I'm preparing to return back to the West. If I have to return it means I have to start from zero in a way, but I've gained a lot of experience here, and has probably strengthened my love for learning languages in general, my love for other cultures, and my decision to live in another country unfamiliar to me even if it's not supposed to be right now.

I'm not giving up, I'm still going to be searching for jobs, but I'm just going to let life happen and see what happens. I still have just enough money to last me for the three months and buy a plane ticket. Yes, money goes fast! If I stay maybe I can use the money I don't buy a plane ticket with to get a small apartment or something.

Roaming Around Kansai

Yesterday I bought a one day pass that allowed my to ride the train all day for 2,990 yen. I had nothing to do and I didn't feel like staying in the house so I just rode the train all over Kansai. I enjoyed the scenery and occasionally dozed off...lol I got off a few times to stretch my legs, but for most of the day I just stayed in the train since it's cold :) It was fun.

Christmas is Coming Soon!

Christmas is coming soon! It will be my first Christmas in Japan! From what I've heard though Christmas here is more of a couples celebration, so a lot of couples go out to eat and do things together. I will probably go to dinner with some friends on Christmas Eve and then maybe take a day trip on Christmas or just read all day...lol

Depending on where I am, I'm usually spending time with family or partying or both. :)
I've been lucky enough to experience Christmas in America, Jamaica, England, Portugal, Germany, etc, and now Japan! My best Christmas and New Year's are always in Jamaica, there's always a lot going on, and it's warm.....just right :) I will definitely say yes, different parts of the world have there own version of Christmas or different traditions, especially house to house may differ.

神戸ルミナリエ！Kobe Luminarie

From December 2nd until the 13th the Kobe Luminarie was held. The Kobe Luminarie festival is held every year to commemorate the 1995 Hanshin Earthquake. Every night the streets were packed with people going to see the lights. I went a few night ago, snapped some pics, and came back to my room...lol

忘年会！！Year End Party!

Last Friday was our school's year end party. Myself and another classmate from Finland were the MCs for the night. It was a lot of fun!! We ate a lot, and played some fun games. It was also a good chance for students to meet some Japanese people. At the end, we all exchanged gifts :)

人生は海みたい

最近いろいろがあって人生は海みたいなものだっていうことにに気づいた。
一瞬上がったり下がったりしていて、一つづつの波に乗るしかないあるいは溺れ死ぬ。
人生と同じだと思います。人生の中にいろいろな状況に置かれています。一瞬いい状況もあるし、悪い状況もあるし。どんなに悪い状況でも自分の見方を変えれば、自分の人生の成り行きも変えられると思います。どんなに大きい波がきても乗れるようになります。
海もきれいだし、人生も美しいし、そこで人生の波に乗り、人生を満喫してください。

Kanpai!!

This weekend I had a chance to go to the Suntory beer and whisky factory in Kyoto with a few of my teachers and one of my roommates.
They show the process that they go through to make the beverages, and at the the end of the tour you get to drink!! It was a very "educational" experience. You get to learn the science behind beer and whiskey, and then you get to try the finished product.
It was a nice long day of fun and drinking and fun and drinking. :-)

This is where the storage room where they store the whiskey after it has gone through the whole process. The smell in this room was like heaven! lol

Fall is Beautiful

As fall is winding down, (I think) everyone is rushing to see the last of the colorful leaves. In Japan, fall leaf viewing is one of the big events in the fall. There are even special places where people can go to have a "special" viewing of the fall leaves near temples and places with a lot of nature. From where I live I have a beautiful view of the mountains behind my house and that fine with me. :)

I actually did go to Kiyomizu dera, a Buddhist temple in Kyoto, to have a special light up of view at night. It was crowded! Especially since it was a holiday.
I've been doing a lot of traveling especially to Kyoto so I have been able to enjoy from the train or just walking around places.
This is another good place in Kyoto :)

I'm Back!!

I know that it's been a while since I've posted anything but I'm back! Sometimes there are bumps along the journey and you just have to figure out how to handle things appropriately. During my break, I took a lot of time to reflect on a lot of things and realign myself back on my path. I feel refreshed and ready to take on the world again! I'm still hungry, and I'm still trying to devour that Japanese!! Look forward to more posts again.

Norwegian Wood

Lately I've been reading Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami, which was a recommendation from one of my teachers. Haruki Murakami is probably one of the most famous authors in Japan right now. In 2009, he just came out with 1Q84, which is now on it's 3rd volume and on my list of books to read. Also, I'm late, but I just found out that there will be a movie Norwegian Wood based on the novel coming out in December, which I'm excited to see. I'm not a big fan of movies based on books, however, there have been a few times where I like both the movie and the book. So I will definitely be checking out the movie, even if I haven't finished the book yet!

最近な、失敗だらけから俺の人生はどうになっているかわからへん。

失敗しないと、成長できない、という考え方があるのに、たまに失敗は取り戻せない。それで大人になっているかなって。自分の人生の中でたまに悪い判断で馬鹿なことをするし、それで人生はくるしくなるかもしれへん。でも、たぶん一番重要なのは自分の失敗から学ぶことです。自分に起こることは理由があるんだと思っています。
最初は忘れようしても、忘れられない。ただ時間が経つにつれて、忘れて始める。だけど、いつもレッスンとして心の中に残っておいて、それから人生の困難に遭遇すると簡単に解決することができる。

たしかに他人の失敗から学べるけど、自分の強さ、自分の才能とかを見つけるために、たまに自分の失敗しかない経験しなきゃと思う。それなかったら人生は簡単すぎるし、意味がない。

俺はどんなおとなになっても、がんばる。

Back to School!

So I've been back to school for about a week now. It's good to be back to see the new people and just get back into the groove of school. Now I'm in E class, which is the upper level intermediate course. It is very challenging, but it's fun! On Friday we will have a BBQ or picnic to welcome the new students. Can't wait!

Back from Tokyo Pt.2 Day 2

On my 2nd day in Tokyo one of friends was able to show me around Tokyo. So I went to all of the famous places like Shibuya, Ikebukuro, Shinjuku, Harajuku and the like. Since this was my first real time in Tokyo, it felt like the movies, especially seeing and being able to walk through the famous pedestrian crossing in Shibuya....lol Unfortunately it was a rainy, but we made our way around doing a bit of window shopping and stuff like that.

Tokyo in general, is really too crowded for me, but it's where everything in terms of company headquarters and stuff like that. Ideally I would like to stay in Kansai, but I'll go where the opportunities are as well!

Also, I was fortunate enough to get to take a class at Waseda University on Telecommunication and Broadcasting Art or something like that. lol It was long. That's all I will say about that. It was good to see what the campus and stuff was like though.

Back From Tokyo! Pt.1 説明会！

I just got back from Tokyo a few days ago. It was definitely a great experience! I only spent two days, one day at the seminar, and one just checking out a bit of Tokyo.

As far as the seminar or setsumeikai, it was very interesting. The company deals with business intelligence and stuff like that which is directly up my street since it is some of what I studied in university. In university, the same company came to give presentations so I was fully aware of, even if I couldn't understand every word, what was going on.

The flow of the program was first there was an explanation about the company and what they do, which was about 2 hours or so.Then, we were able to ask questions to recent hires. I was a bit nervous to speak at first, but I got over that real quick and shot a few questions. Afterward we took a 10 min. break and then took a series of tests including math and just basic reading comprehension in Japanese and a small portion in English.
By the way, math and in Japanese! I haven't seen math since I took Calculus II in my freshman semester, which now is a long time from now...lol I would say I definitely took longer than everyone else, since I don't read and comprehend that fast yet...lol

What I will say helped me is READING on my own. I have a few business and programming books in Japanese that I will dabble in when I'm in the mood. Just being able to recognize that I heard some of the same words from those books during the presentation, was a big motivation. So keep reading, even if you don't understand it all yet. One day it'll all come together. Take it from AJATT. Alot of times people look at me like, "Why are you reading that?" or "Can you understand everything?". However, it's more about just reading what you want to read or doing what you want to do in general. Even in your native language you don't understand every word that you come across, but you still have some level of understanding of the message. So keep reading, keep learning!

Overall, it was just a great experience! If I did well on the aptitude test, I'll be back in Tokyo soon! :) Regardless of the result, I'll be back in Tokyo soon :)

Goin to Tokyo!!!

In a few days, I'll be going to Tokyo!!!I'm only going for about two days or so, but it's for a good reason. I'm going to a setsumeikai (説明会・せつめいかい） for a company that I have been eying for a long time...lol

What is a setsumeikai?
If I translate it literally it means explanation meeting. I'm not very familiar with them, other than what people have told me, but from what I understand it's basically a big gathering where the company talks about what they do and stuff like that. For many companies, this is the first step of their recruiting process.

At the one I'm going to, there will be an explanation for about two hours and afterward there will be an aptitude test. In order to sign up for the setsumeikai I had to answer a few questions. I don't know how much weight they put on the questions, but I don't think my answers were adequate. I just wanted the experience of going to a setsumeikai. You never know what could happen!
We'll see how it turns out!!

Completion/Graduation Ceremony

On Friday, we had the Completion/Graduation Ceremony. I'm not exactly sure but maybe about 6 or 7 people graduated. Most of the students that graduated spent about a year, and boy does time fly. I wish them the best in whatever future endeavor they have. Some will return to their country, but some will stay in Japan and make a life of their own here.

Well it's been about 6 months since I've been in Japan studying in language school. After 6 months I feel like I can talk about things that I've observed first hand at school after giving them lots of thought.

Probably the biggest thing that I like about Kobe Toyo is the support. The teachers and staff are there whenever you need them. Whether you want to talk about something you don't understand in class, whether you want help with your personal goals, or you just want to chat, they are always there. They never hesitate, and will be right there to sit down and talk with you about whatever.

You will definitely become familiar with the teachers after a few months, especially since you have a main teacher and 4 others that will rotate throughout the week.
Also, everyone is very cheerful. Coming to an unfamiliar place, or going from being able to communicate your every feeling and thought to not even being able to the most simple things can be frustrating. The teachers definitely help make this transition a bit easier by being patient and just being there.

The time is going by so quick!! I'm looking forward to a new semester in a new challenging class :) The new semester starts October 12, so the new students should be on there way!

Final Exams

This week and last week we've been having final exams.
Last week's final exams were based around conversation. So we had a basic conversation test, a keigo test, and a presentation.

I will say I did the basic conversation test and keigo test on the fly, no studying because I feel like in real life you don't know what people are going to say to you or what words they're going to use, so just let it be natural as possible.

As far as the presentation, we had to introduce a city we've been to. I prepared a presentation about Athens, Greece, which is beautiful, and if you haven't been you should definitely go to Greece. Surprisingly I was able to remember my spiel with not much trouble. This was definitely a good exercise, because I feel like I really want to improve my speech.

Starting tomorrow, we'll have a series of tests. First, kanji, then grammar, and then probably the last test will be a placement test of some sort to see which class we will place in for the next semester.

Gotta Run!

Probably since I started university, I got in the habit of running about 2 or 3 times out of the week. The biggest reason is just so I can keep a mental/physical balance going. When I was younger I used to do sports, but I stopped liking the competition. Especially because I sucked, and people don't give you opportunity when you suck...lolYou just sit on the bench and watch the game, no sweat, no dirt, no adrenaline.

So I mainly practiced on my own, or played with friends, so just as I would start to feel like was getting good at something I would loose interest mainly because it was always about winning and not about the personal and team development, which I think that's one of the reasons sports are there.But to be fair, I guess it is about winning too :) lol

Anyway, since I've been here I've not stopped running. I usually run from my place to the sea, and back nonstop. It used to take me about 50 to 40 min. but now I can usually do my route in about 30 min. The feeling afterward is priceless! Not to mention I get the best sleep ever afterward.

Job Hunting!

I know I just wrote a few posts about me recently getting a part-time job, but that is not the end! Probably since the beginning of the summer, even before that, I've been looking for full-time jobs. Before June, I was probably looking on and off, but since July when I'm not in school or not studying, or at work, or playing :), I'm looking for jobs.

It's funny, when I was in university since I knew I was coming here, I never really focused to much on looking for a job. I went to a lot of career related events, especially thanks to my major, but it wasn't time. However, now I understand why everyone was running around like a chicken with their head cut off. lol While everyone was always talking about their jobs and internships, especially the last semester, I had my eyes directed at Japan. :) Now that I'm here, I'm definitely ready to see what is out there. It's time, so it will all work out.

As well as putting in applications to places online, I'm also considering trying to join the regular crowd here for job hunting just for the experience. I have my Japanese resume ready to go! The only thing is that my connections are not as big since I'm not going to a university here, and that's probably the biggest part of job hunting in Japan for students. So if you want to work in Japan, you may want to consider finishing your degree here or something along those lines. That way you can properly do job hunting.

Most of my friends have all gotten jobs for next spring, which I'm not surprised at since they're all pretty bright. :p Having gone through the process here, they've given me a lot of advice on what to do, and are always there when I need help.

It feels a bit nerve wrecking but good at the same time, preparing up for interviews and stuff like that again. This is it, this is where I'm going to build. No matter where you are, or want to go opportunity is definitely there. I didn't fully have a plan when I came, but I'm slowly just following my path as it is illuminated. Everything will come together, piece by piece. In good and bad times, opportunity is there my friends.

夏の最後の花火・Summer's Last Fireworks

Last night I met up with some friends in Osaka to do what I would say is the last fireworks for the summer. All summer, there were firework shows, and people doing there own fireworks. Around now, the sale of fireworks definitely slows down.
Fall is coming. You can definitely tell because the wind is picking up, and it was hard to light the fireworks last night...lol

From nezumi hanabi(rat fireworks) to senkou hanabi (sparklers?) there was a good variety of fireworks to choose from.

It's like magic!

Yes Smile, Yes Yurt!!

Yurt is the name of the restaurant that I started working at. I didn't know but "yurt" actually has a meaning...lol It is actually a tent-like home that nomads live in or something like that.Yurt is definitely a stylish restaurant/cafe with like a European/American twist to it. You can get anything from curry to bbq to different kinds of deli salads. It's delicious!! Also drinks are all 500 yen, alcohol included!The restaurant opened up last Friday, and it looks like it's been doing well from then. I stopped in for lunch yesterday, just to better study some of the food :D, and the place was jam packed!It's located right behind my school. The area where it's located is perfect because it's in the shopping district as well where a lot of people work. So people go there between/after work and to take a break from shopping.

I'm working in the hall of the restaurant. So that means, greeting people, taking orders, serving food and drinks, and rotating washing dishes and stuff.

Probably the best aspects of this experience is being able to deal with people, and getting to work in a Japanese environment.Everyday I get to meet different people. I usually get the opportunity just to chat with them as well as my co-workers. Before, since all my friends live mainly in Osaka, especially when I first got here, I would just walk around just to see who I could meet...lol I would chat to people at the supermarket, or just sit at the park and chat to whoever I happened to stumble upon. I still just chat with random people when I feel like it, because it's fun...lol

Also this job, gives me the opportunity of dealing with Japanese people in their regular everyday activities. Going to a language school, I would say that it's hard to meet Japanese people besides the teachers, and language partners that are affiliated with the school. Unless you're willing to jump outside of your comfort zone and just chat with people outside of school, go out on the town a bit, or you already know people living in Japan, it can be hard to meet people. Some people will come up and talk to you, but maybe because you look different, or because they want an English speaking buddy or w/e. But they might be weird....lol j/k (no I'm not) lol

Everyone at my job is about in the 20-30 age range including the bosses so that's pretty cool. I'm the only foreigner so that's cool as well. So yes, everything is in Japanese, and not much is broken down for me only, so I have to be on my P's and Q's all the time.

Also, there are a lot of cultural things that are not in books, or that you don't learn at school that you definitely learn on the job. For example, different salutations , things that are acceptable to say and do. I think language school is pretty lenient when in comes to stuff like this, just taking in account that people come from different places and they want to accommodate the students to some extent.

I love this job, even when I make mistakes! I'm glad that they give me this opportunity. Everyday I'm learning and growing and hopefully everyone can learn from this experience.

Back 2 School

Yesterday was the first day of school after Summer break. After 2 weeks we will have final exams or something like that, and then we will have Fall break! During that period probably new students will come in for the Fall term starting in October.

I don't know if I can say I was happy to start back, mainly because I feel like I just got here yesterday, and now it's already September.

As far as my progress, I feel like school is a lot slower. It is good to reinforce the things that I learn outside of the classroom, but it feels a bit too slow and watered-down for me..lol
Spending the whole summer just hanging out and being in my Japanese environment, whether with friends, or at work, maybe I couldn't see any growth in my Japanese because of the learning curve but maybe there was just a little :) At work and play is probably where I'll get my full meal of Japanese everyday :)

This will be another progressive semester!

Speaking of Japanese Language School, there is a manga called Nihonjin no Shiranai Nihongo, which is now a drama. This is probably one of the first mangas I read, but it makes more sense once you actually understand, because you can get the humor of the mistakes that people make when learning Japanese. If you have a chance you should check it out. It's basically about what a Japanese Language School is like. It covers everything from the crazy things that students say, to even the teacher not knowing the answer to some questions about Japanese or Japanese culture and student's responses. It's a bit exaggerated, but I can definitely relate to it since I'm going to one. lol

Young Veterans - Dream Dayz Riddim

.Since I've been studying Japanese, I haven't really been keeping up with what's been going on in the reggae/dancehall world like used to. I still keep my ears open, a little bit...lol

I just want to introduce Young Veterans productions to the world quickly. I've literally watched Young Veterans grow from an idea to where it is today. They have worked with a lot of artistes in the industry, from those just starting there career to those who have been in the industry for years.

I remember when we used to pass out cd's at events like ATI in Negril, Jamaica and just anywhere we were just a few years ago. A lot of long nights in the studio and stuff...good times :). I believe it will pay off soon.

神戸ハーバーランド温泉・Kobe Harbor Land Onsen

Today after work, I went to a new indoor onsen that opened up in Kobe in July. I was lucky to get a free ticket to go, so I wanted to use it before it expired!

I must say it was a great experience. It was first time and not the last time going to the onsen. There are about 9 floors of activities ranging from games, manga, and internet access, to different types of massages, the onsen, and saunas.
I spent about 30 mins or so in the actual onsen. First you have to wash yourself thoroughly before you enter. Then I went back and forth from the onsen to the sauna. It was just good alone time, in a nice quiet place. It was a good time to just hear myself and relax myself.

Afterward, I went up to the 18th floor. On the 18th floor they have a foot bath, with blue lights and beautiful night view of Kobe. I probably sat up there for another 20-30 min.

Then I went to the 10th floor and enjoyed a smoothie and read a manga.
They also have options to spend the night and stuff like that. Anything you want is there. It's great. It's like a getaway in the middle of the concrete jungle...lol

A few weeks ago, I got a call back from the second interview I did, telling me I got the job. So I will be working in a restaurant/cafe!!! I've never worked in a restaurant before so this should be interesting, especially working in a stylish restaurant in Japan!

There is a lot to learn, but it seems like it will be fun. I'm learning everything from greetings, to how to pick up and carrythe plates, and not to forget the lingo used for certain terms. Within the short time, I already respect what people in the restaurant industry do because it's not easy. From customer service, to the actually operation of the business, it's 24/7 work. I started training on Saturday. The restaurant/cafe has not opened yet, so I will be part of the opening staff!!
これからも頑張ります！

I feel like this puts me one step closer to the goal. Not jumping the gun, but yes, I'm already looking for full time jobs. I'm determined, and not stopping, never stopping.
I'm hungry.

I Love Melon Pan

Today as I walked from the grocery store, I looked down and peeped into my grocery bag, and smiled as I saw the two melon pans staring right back at me. I don't know what it is, but I love melon pan.

After a long night of partying, for breakfast, for an afternoon snack, when I need brain food, melon pan is the food of choice. I think for me it's melon pan's simplicity that really makes me pick it over anything else. Soft, filling bread, with a bit of sweet to it. Not too overpowering or anything. Just right.

From a child I've always liked my food simple. For example, harddough bread with nothing on it. No butter, margarine, jam, just the nice plain bread. If I eat a salad, I eat a salad, no dressing. Even things like hot dogs and french fries. I think they taste just fine how they are, I don't need wads of ketchup and other condiments to smother the real taste of the food.

Two things I remember: My cousin used to smother everything and it used to drive me insane!! She used to eat rice and ketchup and literally put sooo much ketchup in the rice! Second, if she had pancakes or waffles she would smother them in the syrup until they were soggy. (I still love you though cuz) :p

It might sound weird, but I don't care, I just like to keep it simple.
Melon pan just makes my day :).

Osaka Bike Ride!!

Today was a good day. I woke up around 8 ready to go on our journey. My roommate and I decided that we were going to ride or bicycles to from Kobe to Osaka one day during the summer and today was the day!

We left out around 10AM and got some rations for the road. I chose my favourite, melon pan and onigiri :) Also some drinks to stay hydrated. After that we hit the road. We stopped maybe three times on the way. When we reached to about Amagasaki, one piece of rain fell and we were soaked. After that we made it somewhere near Tenoji in Osaka.

We arrived in Osaka about 2:15PM or so. So all in all in took us about 4 hours. By the way, from Sanomiya, Kobe to Umeda, Osaka it takes about 25-30 min. by train. It's about 30km or 18 miles one way!

It was good because there is so much that we have not seen, and that you can't see when you're in the train.

After drying off, it rained again on the way back!!! We got back around 6 or so.
Tomorrow I will probably wish I didn't do it. lol Although I run a lot, the bicycle uses a lot of different muscles as well.

On Sunday, I went to a Shamisen Performance given by one of my language partner's wife. The Shamisen is a three stringed instrument that you can read more about here! The Shamisen actually derives from the Sanshin, which I mentioned in a previous post.

Minato Kobe Hanabi Taikai!! みなと神戸花火大会！

On Saturday, I went to Minato Kobe's Hanabi Taikai( Fireworks viewing). All I have to say is that is was amazing!!
After going to two firework events I know what to look for in terms of a good show :)
There's something about fireworks here that just feel like magic. Between the way the people come together and just the fireworks themselves. They really look like they are coming from the sky, and get so close I feel like I can touch them. いいなぁ。
土曜日みなと神戸花火大会へ行った。さすが、花火がきれいだった。花火を見るとなんかいい感じがする。天神祭とPLの花火も同じようないい感じがした。
その一瞬にみんな一緒に幸せそうだった。恋人と、家族と、友達と、みんな幸せそうだった。
恋人といえば、花火が見ると恋が叶うそういう説があるらしいんだ。
なんかな、花火はマジックみたい。花火はオーロラそういう現象みたいと思う。オーロラは見たことがないやけど、見たらたそういういい感じがするかもしれない。オーロラだったらたぶんもっと強くなる。言いすぎかもしれないでも僕の言いたいことがわかるでしょ！　笑

つまり、日本の花火が素晴らしい！

Beer Garden, ビアガーデン!!

A few days ago, I went to a beer garden in Osaka. Beer garden is basically a restaurant on top of a building with all you can eat yaki niku and all you can drink, anything you want, but I guess in particular beer! I didn't really drink beer before I came to Japan; the closest thing I would drink is Guiness Stout, and that was just socially, but other than that I just stick to the harder stuff :)

It looked like most of the people just got off work. I probably looked like I just got off work as well, having had two interviews earlier in the day. It was definitely a good way to end the day.

Beer Garden is a good place to go with your friends or co-workers. I definitely recommend this place if you want to have a good time!

PL 花火！！

Yesterday I went to PL Hanabi in the country side of Osaka. PL stands for Perfect Liberty, the name of the school that holds the hanabi event. If I recall correctly, PL Hanabi is the biggest Hanabi event in the Kansai area.
The fireworks were amazing! A lot of different colors and combinations. Simply beautiful. When it first began, the fireworks were loud enough to scare away all the birds in trees trying to get some cicada for dinner...lol
We left before the last set of fireworks, but trust me, if we didn't we probably wouldn't have made it home that night, because there were so many people.

Natsu Yasumi!!! 夏休み！！ Summer Break!!

Today is the start of Natsu Yasumi!!! We have the whole month off. Initially I was planning to go to Thailand, Vietnam, or Bali or something for a week or so and just chill out. But I decided to stay here and get a bit more grounded.

I'm still looking for a part-time job, I have a few interviews next week, so wish me luck!!!

Other than the serious stuff, I'll be playing :) Eating a lot, drinking a lot and playing alot in Kansai. Living life.

This video is a change from my usual video, but I must say this has been the best July I've had in a looong time. I spent about three summers slugging away at the books to get out early, and it was worth it!! Now it's time to get ready to go to Kyoto for the night!!

Last Day of Class, Reflection

Today was the last day of class before summer break!! Today was ok, but then near the end there was a bit of turbulence. There was a forum where universities came to talk to the students about their schools and what they had to offer. That's fine, but it was not optional and we had to ask questions, so I had to go.

Anybody that knows me, knows that as open minded as I can be, I hate being forced into things. Anytime I feel a forcing feeling I run like the wind...lol If there's a good reason behind something, or if I just straight up have to do it, I'll do it. But no matter what, whether it's a relationship, a shoe, a situation, I hate forced stuff. I like to just flow with things as natural as possible. Now that I think about it, even force ripe fruit, I won't touch it. It has to be propa.

Probably the biggest reason for this feeling is that I dread having to go back to school. After grinding out school and even finish college early, I just don't want anything to do with it. Between how the education system is run, and financial reasons I just get the creeps thinking about going to school. After all the slugging, what does the piece of paper mean? I have the capability to do any job somebody were to give me, whether in Japanese or English, or whatever language, wherever,I just need somebody to believe that. I'm not much of a talker, because I don't believe that's what sells a product or a person. Action is the key. In any many situations, performance is what gives something lasting credibility and leaves a lasting impression.

So when I do find a job, and any other aspect of my life, people will see what I have to offer through my actions.

The Sound of Summer

You finally know it's summer when you hear the sound of the semi (cicada). Every morning, as long as it's not raining, I'm greeted with a wake up call from the semi. I usually sleep with my window open, since I'm not a fan of A/C too much, so its like my alarm clock for the summer :)　They probably start up the same time every morning, which reminds of the rooster my cousin had in Jamaica, which would start crowing every morning at 6A.M. on the dot...lol 懐かしいな！
R.I.P. Charlie :)

I noticed their shells on the ground maybe last week or so, but never saw them until yesterday. In the park near my house, I saw some little girls catching them. By the time I came, they had a pet box with about 5 semi in it, buzzing away. I helped them catch a few more hiding in the trees, but didn't dare touch them. These things are huge and ugly...lol, but one of the girls was a pro, and was not afraid to grab one with her bare hands. I'll leave that to her :p

天神祭！！Tenjin Matsuri!!　Pt.2

This is me trying to catch some fishies!!　This is actually called Kingyo sukui (金魚すくい）, or Goldfish scooping. I caught about 5 fish before my net thingy broke.

Last week I did the same thing with turtles at Gion Festival. There's actually a funny story with that, that I didn't tell before.

So after I caught about 3 turtles, I was able to keep one. I was happy, I won a turtle. We all even went as far as to name it Yuka. Maybe 30 min. later, I start thinking, "How am I going to take care of this turtle?" "What do turtles eat again?" "Where is it going to live?" "I'm not ready to be a daddy yet!?" lol It's enough just trying to take care of myself, but everyone thought I should raise it.

On the way home I ran back to the turtle catching place, and I told the guy sorry, but I can't take care of the turtle!! It was a sad night, I had to part with Yuka. :(

But I'm glad, I didn't want the turtle's life left in my hands :)These were the last big fireworks which look and sound more like explosions or some crazy gunshots...lol

天神祭！！Tenjin Matsuri!!　Pt.1

Sunday night I went to Tenjin Matsuri in Osaka. When I say it was packed, the place was full up of people!!! From getting on the train to just walking around, you could hardly move. But it was well worth it. The food was delicious, and not to mention the fireworks. It was my first time seeing fireworks in Japan, and it was amazing. Around summer, fireworks, or hanabi (はなび・花火）　are very popular.
These were my partners in crime for the night. 楽しかったな！
In the beginning, the fireworks were small, but as the night when on, they gradually got bigger until they just looked like big explosions!

UGA Reunion!!

I haven't really talked about my past life before Japan yet, but I went to the University of Georgia, in Athens, Georgia. During those 3 and a half years these are some of the people I met. Since some of us live in the Kansai area we often hang out when we can since we are all in Japan now, but some are busy with job hunting, or are working so we don't really get to see them. When everybody has a chance we try and meet up when we can. This is group of people I met at what would have been the end of my junior year, but was like the beginning of my senior year...about Spring 2009 if I can recall correctly :). We took trips together and just hung out. Especially after we took a trip to Florida for Spring Break we always hung out after that. After about a year, we are able to get almost everybody together.

This was the beginning of my Sunday!!

Last week Thursday I took my first trip to Kyoto, to attend Gion Matsuri!!! It's one of the most famous festivals in Japan. Luckily the rain held up for most of the night. It was a lot of fun!!!

今週の火曜日面接があったんだ。３１アイスという会社だ。失敗しまったけどいい経験だと思う。

とりあえず、違うの電車線に乗ってしまった。係の人は阪神を乗るってけど調べる時、変な電車沿道を見せてので阪急を乗った。でも西宮北口の阪急線と阪神の西宮はぜんぜん違う！それで緊張したかも。

それから阪急の店員に聞いて、みんなは俺を手伝ってよかった！係の人に電話して、「すいません、でも遅くになりますかもしれません」って。そのあと、阪急の店員はタクシーを見つかった。

１０分早くに着いた！！窓からみんな俺だった知ってた。笑　面接が５分かかったかもしれない。短かった！よかったけどあと丁寧な言葉と礼儀とかあまり使わなかったと気づいた。

でもやっぱりな、俺その会社のイメージに合わないと思う。想像しにくいな、日本で黒人の方はアイスクレーム店で、「いらっしゃいませ！」ちょっと変な。でもそれ関係ない、その仕事は簡単だ。さらに、俺がいったら、その仕事は面白くなるかも。　笑

何か面接のとき１０秒に人の印象に残ることができるので、間違ったとしても、その会社俺をほしかったら、きのう電話してくれたと思う。

人と接するのバイト本当にしたい。もしそれができたら、いつも日本語練習ことができるうえにたくさん人に会える。

残念だったでも相変わらず俺頑張るよ。

いい経験だった。

諦めへん。

Motivation, Filling in the Gaps

Everyday I feel like I am understanding more and more, which therefore, leads to me being able to express myself more and clearly. Right now I want to feel the gaps in my understanding. I'm going to keep doing what I do, I am at the point where I just want to suck in all the information to fill in the gaps. そうします。

The gaps in my understanding are slowly, but surely get smaller, at least when it comes to everyday things.

Well, I'm going to get back to feeding myself Japanese, I just felt like writing a bit more. :)

Interview

Today was my interview with the ice cream shop. The name is 31 Ice Cream, which is the Japanese branch of Baskin Robbins, I think.

Right after class I made my way to the interview location. I ended up taking the wrong train line. I was told to take the Hanshin Line, but when I went to research the train schedule, it was giving me a funky looking route for the train I was supposed to take, and it looked longer, so I took Hankyuu. They both go to the same place, but the stations are in different locations and the Hankyuu Station is a lot farther than the Hanshin Station from where I needed to be.

I asked for help at the train station, and they were very nice. They quickly printed a map for me and helped with no hesitation. I called the store and told them that I might be a bit late because I took the wrong line. Afterward, one of the train staff led me to a taxi. After 10 min. I was there. If I didn't take a taxi it probably would've have been impossible to reach on time.

I was probably 10 min. earlier, but since the store has big windows and they were expecting me, I was greeted with a smile from a few of the employees and the manager, and I gladly returned it. We had the interview outside. I didn't know what to expect, but I was preparing long spiels last night on what to say and manners and stuff. The interview lasted about 5 minutes!!

The manager first asked for my resume, then asked if I could work summer and winter since those are the busiest times, and then asked where I was from. She also told me when training would start and stuff. I didn't really have any questions because it seemed pretty straight forward. The only thing I wished I would have asked is the name of the person that was interviewing me, and if transportation fees were covered. In job ads, it is usually stated clearly if transportation is covered or not, but it's always good to ask!

After being thrown off by getting lost, I feel like I forgot a few things like business manners and stuff. It was a pretty relaxed atmosphere, but it's always good to use manners!!! I believe that no matter where I am. As my mother and father would say, "Manners will take you a long way.", and it's true. Hopefully even though I forgot a few things, I left a good impression.　After I have so many interviews and more experiences, things will definitely flow a lot smoother since I'll know what to do. Putting things into action is the best way to learn.
It seems like a cool place to work, improve my skills, get more indoctrinated into the Japanese society, and meet a lot of different people.

Afterward, I couldn't resist, I had 3 scoops of ice cream. If I am going to work there, I need to know the product :p I'll hear the result tomorrow if I get it!!! Wish me luck! If not it's back to the grind!

First Interview in Japan!

Tomorrow I go for my first interview here at an ice cream shop. I'm definitely looking forward to it. I shaved off my beard and mustache fully for the first time in my life, so it feels a bit weird, but I figured it was the best way to go...lol Another stage in life! For the rest of the night I'll just be resting up and preparing my spiel.

Going Back to My Hometown, Himeji

I had a pretty busy weekend. It started off at a nomikai, and then I went to the club afterward. The next day I went to see Toy Story 3. It was really good, as I expected. Also it was my first time to try out the 3-D glasses at the movies!! The movie theater is very expensive in Japan! Even after a student discount, its was still about $16 including the 3-D glasses if I remember correctly :p

The highlight of my weekend was going back to Himeji. If you remember, Himeji is where I started my journey, so I feel like it is my birthplace here :) My friend has a piano recital on Sunday so I went to help out with that.

I love going back, I always feel like I'm apart of my friend's family. They just talk to me normally, like I'm Japanese..lol, which I like because often people don't think I understand so they always slow down their speech. There are times when I don't understand, but I would rather have them naturally repeat it over and over than to slow it down. I will definitely say that at school things are a lot slowed down, so I think I understand Japanese until I go hang out with my other friends and their families...lol Especially since they teach standard Japanese at school, and I live in Kansai. But I guess knowing both dialects is good.

Anyway, Himeji was fun. I came back to Kobe last night well taken care of.

Tanabata ・七夕

Last week Wednesday day, was Tanabata, which is a Japanese star festival. Usually people write their wishes on a piece of paper and hang them on a bamboo tree. At school last Friday, we had a Tanbata celebration! It was lots of fun!

I always forget what the guy one is called, but the girls got to wear yukatas after the celebration.

Summer Time!!

I can officially say it's summer time. Besides the fact that the place has heated up, there's tons to do. Soon there will be matsuri's and hanabi in August. Lately all of my weekends have been filled with fun people, and things to do. Even during the week :)
Last weekend I went out in Osaka to a Nomikai, and ended the weekend in Suma beach. Suma beach is about 10 minutes by train from Sannomiya. It's not as pretty as any beach I've been to in Jamaica, but still nice vibes, still beautiful. They have stalls by the water playing all kinds of music. Apparently is summer, reggae is the music of choice, which makes me feel right at home :).

Today marks the official day, when I started loading myself up with Japanese arsenal and firing away. I remember it like it was yesterday. Probably weeks ago, a year ago I was still trying to figure out how I could get started studying Japanese. There are many methods to the madness, but I really wanted something that I could stick with and create a nice momentum. The only thing that seemed reasonable is AJAAT, which I happened to stumble upon one day at work after Spanish class. I went to my room, read the whole website and then it all made sense. I had been doing a bit of it with Spanish, but not to the same degree.

AJAAT basically just tells you to keep a Japanese environment. Do everything in Japanese. You can do it with any language you want to learn, and it doesn't have to be a forced thing. You just make it your lifestyle.

I literally disregarded any deterrent that told me, "NO!", whether it was a person, a negative thought(Because a positivity wi seh!:p), or whatever, and changed my lifestyle. All of my dear Spanish stuff, all of my reggae/dancehall, reggaeton, salsa, bachata, my english and spanish poetry as well, I neatly filed away, and I did everything I could in Japanese from that point.

People looked at me like I was crazy. Even people that smiled and said I could do it, I know they were thinking I was crazy. I had been talking about moving to Japan for about a year at this point, but I don't think it was really clicking that I was serious.

My last 6 months of university I devoted to Japanese. I did my IT work in Japanese as much as possible while listening/watching Japanese. I made sure that was the beginning, middle, and end of my day. My coworkers probably thought I was crazy too. (If you all are reading, I miss you, sorry I haven't shot you a mail or anything) When I first started working there, I was always quiet. As it went on you could always here reggae or reggaeton coming from my office. After I started my new lifestyle my office was full of Japanese lyrics on the wall, and me trying to sing :p

Step by step, word by word, slowly but surely I will get to wherever I'm supposed to be . Every moment is fun!!

Current Goal

Right now, my biggest goal is to get a part-time job. Most people think, "Just teach English." But I want to take things from a different angle and try getting a part time job that any other Japanese person would have. Why? It's a great experience, and I can better surround myself in the real Japanese environment. Right now, I'm looking at different onsen's, resorts, and things of that nature where interaction with people is necessary. I think I work pretty well with people and so I can definitely meet new people, whether co-workers or just people I meet on the job. If all else fails, I will think about teaching English, but I'm ready for a real challenge, even if it doesn't pay as well.

Free Time

Today I decided to stop going to my afternoon classes. The afternoon class is the course which prepares one for tests to enter universities in Japan, and also for the Japanese Language Proficiency test.
They were really starting to wear me down a bit, especially with the tests coming up. I'm not taking any of them, but I signed up for the classes just to keep my options open, and see what they had to offer.
However, now I have a good extra 4 hours and I don't think I'll be as tired. I can definitely put in a few more hours of my own study time and definitely a lot more play time :).
Since my goal is more of being able to use the language, playing is a lot more important than pushing my head in books too hard. Plus, I did that already in high school and university :-p. I'm not as concerned with passing tests and stuff.
If you need someone to manage your studying and stuff, I definitely recommend it, but I've always been a fan of macro management.
I really like my morning class though, because it focuses on the fundamentals, which is important in anything. The more I can practice the fundamentals, whether at school, in my room, or with my friends, the better I'll get.
Right now the most important thing is understanding. The more I can understand, after a while the more I can output.

New Wheels

In a previous post where I talked about going to library and using a bike, I talked about how much I didn't want a bike and so on. After playing with the thought for three months, I finally gave in and bought a bike today!! It will definitely cut down the time it takes to get from point A to B and that's probably the biggest advantage for me. Also, I can see a lot more of Kobe this way!! I can definitely keep my options open in terms of transportation, bike, foot, bus, train, plane, it's all there now.On Friday, there was another bike that I saw that was well in budget, but I ended up getting this one. I think it'll work out well :)By the way this is Harbor Land. This is also where you can see Port Tower which I am standing in front of in one of the pictures. My roommate and I just rode out down hear to test out the new wheels, and cool out. I usually take a run from where I live to the sea side near Harbor Land about twice a week, it's good for the soul.. :p

Mi Kasa es Su Kasa

First of all umbrella, in Japanese is Kasa(かさ・傘) Now, since about the past 2 weeks, Tsuyu(梅雨）　or the rainy season has started. I won't say that it rains everyday, but it certainly did this weekend. There are also days when the rain is just teasing all day.
Even in any other season, umbrellas are everywhere. I went out in Osaka this weekend and it was definitely raining hard. Usually everyone has these cheap clear umbrellas. So for example when I went out, when it was time to leave you basically just grab an umbrella. They all look just about the same :). Because of this I keep and good umbrella for my everyday use and cheap umbrella I use when I go out.

This is what someone's genkan (玄関）（The place where you put your shoes when first walk in the house) can look like in regards to umbrellas.

The Journey

Up until now, I've been keeping everyone up to date with my daily excursions and my life in Japan.
The further I get on the journey and am able to see my progress, I can share my aspirations a bit more.
Ideally, I would like to start working in Japan as soon as my Japanese gets to a proficient level. I'm in no rush, I want the process to be as fun and natural as possible. I'm still a Japanese baby, just born in Himeji 3 months ago. 笑
I've already started seeking out jobs in the IT field, just to see what's out there. I have no experience right now, besides my university studies, and maybe a little side stuff, but hopefully I can get started here in Japan. During university I was not sure what I wanted to do afterward because relocating has always been a dream of mine. I had no idea of where I wanted to go until maybe my second year, and then I graduated a year and a half later, so everything just went by quick! But I was definitely lining my ducks in row for whatever came up.
As of now, I'm really in the mindset of landing a nice job, getting my own place, and the like. Ready to properly spread my wings.
Right now, I can definitely say I'm feeling the vibes in Japan. There's a lot I don't know, and a lot I still have to experience, but this feels propa (proper..lol)
If it's not Japan, the only other place I could see myself going to is Jamaica and Panama, Costa Rica or Colombia, and maybe England, but I need my sunshine so I would have to second guess the last one...lol
I'm really open to go anywhere just send on the breadz $$$$$$$$ :P

For now I just close my eyes and see where the journey takes me

Japan vs. Netherlands

Today I went to the Kobe stadium in Misaki Koen to watch the Japan vs. Netherlands game. :( The energy was good throughout the stadium, even after realizing that Japan was going to lose. I think Japan had plenty of chances to score, but they messed up!! 残念！！Anyway, it was a lot of fun, here are some pics!!　Because I've been slacking on takin pics, here are more than usual.
By the way I don't play I just watch, and mash up people on the FIFA PS3 :p

文楽遠足！Bunraku Field Trip!

Today my school went to see a Bunraku　performance. Bunraku is a traditional Japanese puppet theater. It was very interesting. It was hard to understand because they use old Japanese. lol Most of the people fell asleep in between. I'm not going to lie, a dozed off a few times :) but I stayed strong. I wasn't able to take pictures inside, but I took a lot outside of the theater.

I went back to Osaka this weekend, as every weekend for the past 3 or 4 weekends to party :p
We watched the start of the World Cup, and had fun. Unfortunately, I don't have a tv in my place. I try and catch the games online when I can, but they're kinda late star!!

This is quite interesting. Meeting new people almost everyday, I am constantly doing self introductions. You know the regular, “Hi my name is …” “Nice to meet you” and stuff like that. Usually people ask your age as well. I’m also used to people asking even my blood type. But yesterday took the cake. Yesterday, a guy I met asked me what my BMI. Afterward he begins to feel for the fat that is no where on my arm. Lol 面白かった!

Horror Movie Season

Now that summer is coming near, so is horror movie season in Japan. Yesterday I went to Shinkaichi (新開地) in Kobe to watch Juon 2(The Grudge) with some friends. It was a lot of fun. Not scary at all, at least to me. J I used to watch a lot of scary movies in college. Most times Friday and Saturday nights were my movie nights, and I would often choose to watch horror films for some reason. I started to watch a lot of Japanese and Thai horror films through recommendations and the fact that a lot of American horror movies were based of these. Last year in college, everybody would gather in my room, eating snacks and drinking shochuu*. Now we’re doing it in Japan. I probably watched so many though, that they are no longer scary, just funny. I am looking forward to having many more movie nights!

Osaka Trip

Today was good. Usually I have class until about 3:30ish, but today the intensive afternoon class was canceled. I like going, but I'm in class from 9 everyday. Since I got out early, I went home and relaxed for a bit before going to Osaka!

One of my language partners invited me to see a film with her and her friends in Osaka. I also invited one of my friends from university. We went to ABC Hall and watched and Italian film. It was pretty interesting. I tried my best to keep up with the Japanese subtitles since that was my best chance at understanding. I also got to practice my Spanish a bit :)

I like going out to places like this, instead of doing the typical party and stuff which I've been doing since I was probably 12. I'm thinking of doing stuff like this at least once a month if I can. There's definitely a lot of good stuff to see.

Here are some pics of Osaka, outside of ABC Hall. I go to Osaka probably about twice a week, but this is my first time really taking pictures. This is actually the cleaner part of Osaka. People usually compare how clean Kobe is compared to Osaka, especially the southern part of Osaka.

Losing Spanish :(

In the name of Spanish, I write this post :(. I just opened up a Spanish novel, that I wanted to read, but feel totally intimidated. I'd much rather stare at a book that has some kanji in it. lol
I knew it was only a matter of time before it happened, but yes, I am losing my dear Spanish. I started learning Spanish when I was about 12 or so, and continued all the way until I graduated from college. But let's face it, no matter how good people said I was, or how better I was than the other students, I still sucked when it came to actually "real" Spanish. In high school, always going to Germany, I interacted with a lot of Hispanics in Germany, from Cuba, Puerto Rico, and so on. Then I took a 2 week trip to Costa Rica when I realized that I didn't understand as much as I wanted to, or couldn't speak very well. Then in university I went to Panama, possibly a future home :) There, I really felt like man, after all this Spanish class, my Spanish still sucks...lol
Don't get me wrong I still love Spanish, but it is low on the priority list. When I get to a nice level, in Japanese I'll go back and "re-learn" Spanish. I still listen to music in Spanish n stuff, but am not really taking it in. I feel way more confident in my Japanese as far as understanding and being able to speak. But I guess it's because it was a different, clearly better learning process from the beginning.
Well in the name of Spanish, I post this video. Maybe I'll peek in my novel once more again. These are quotes from my one of my favourite authors, Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

Language Partners

For the past few weeks, I have been meeting with my language partners. I have a met a few through the school, and also through the international center in Kobe. I think this is a good way to meet people, and exchange language with another person. Even if you don't get a change to go to a foreign country, if you have people at your school that speak the language you are interested in, or you have somewhere where you can go to meet people that speak the language your interested in, I recommend a language partner.

学校の面談！

Last week we had individual interviews/ discussion session with a few of the teachers. They just asked us about our experiences so far in Japan, how everything is going so far in class, and things of that nature. This is good because they really get one on one with the students to try and meet everyone's needs as much as possible.

Nihongo de! Japanese Please!

As I have mentioned before, I am going to a language school in Japan. A big problem in my class, and maybe throughout the school is that since the Chinese students are the majority, they tend to speak a lot of Chinese in school as well as in class. I'm pretty sure that other schools have the same problem with large groups that speak that same language as well. However, for the past 2 weeks or so, it has caused us to have new rules in place to try and ensure our "Japanese environment". None of the rules really bother me, because I'm Japanese. :) You are sure to see me with my novel and my headphones when it is time to break, because all I want to be fed is Japanese :)
I'm not complaining or anything, because I know why I'm here, but for others it is a problem I hope can be solved without too much backlash from the students that could care less.Let's see what happens in the morning!

Tokyo Love Story

Ok, I will admit it. I am a J-drama junkie. Right this minute I am watching Mr. Brain as I type. I started watching it last year, but I couldn't understand a thing, and everything was super fast to me at the time. Mr. Brain was one of the first dramas I watched (and with no subtitles, good for the ear) when I started learning Japanese last July. Time flies! This video however, is the theme song from Tokyo Love Story by Kazumasa Oda . Yamaguchi Sensei's recommendation! This is a classic drama from '91! It has that old school 80ish feel to it, to me at least. I used to watch this drama at work, when I had free time, and while I worked diligently :) One day I will buy the set when I get some funds. If you ever get a chance check it out. Probably soon I will make a list of my top 10 dramas...むずかしいなあー！

Probably, the best thing I like about Japanese cell phones is their ability to use infrared, or 赤外線通信 (sekigaisentsuushin). Usually people have a phone number and an e-mail address. Every time you want to exchange that information it would be a pain to type it in. With the infrared, you just let the phones connect via infrared, and email address and phone number are sent to the other person. This is old technology here, but it is cool actually getting to use it!

Exploring Kobe

After the Kobe Matsuri, we had Monday and Tuesday off to recover from the long week. I used this time to get more familiar with Kobe. My school has given us passes that allow us to get into places around Kobe and Hyogo-ken like museums, aquariums, and the like for free! On Tuesday, I went to the Kobe Museum. They had an Egyptian exhibition on display. The place was packed! I actually went to an Austrian exhibition a month or so ago and it was the same way.
Afterward, I met up with Sky-chan and went up to Kitano (still in Kobe) and we went to Uroko No Ie, which is an Art Gallery with some pretty cool pieces. Kitano definitely has a European feel to it, which shows the European presence that was in Kobe. I will definitely be traveling be traveling around Hyogo and Kobe, going to different museums, events, and plays and stuff. Stay tune

It was sooo much fun. I ate a lot of food. I spent most of the time speaking to people, and ...eating...lol There was food from Thailand, Korea, China, Taiwan, Australia, and Sweden to name a few. Everything was made by the students. I would have made a Jamaiacan dish, but I don't think my skills are up there yet, especially to cook for anyone but myself yet. :)
During the matsuri you could definitely see the large Brazilian presence in the parade. As they partied like it was carnival. Brazil has the largest Japanese population outside of Japan. So you have a lot of people that emigrate back and forth I guess.

Getting Ready for Kobe Matsuri

The past couple of days have been very busy, but also very fun as we prepared for Kobe's Matsuri. A Matsuri（祭り・まつり） is basically a festival. Today was Kobe's matsuri! There are a lot of stalls with food, and food, and ....food. Well, at least that's all I saw. :) Also there is a parade. On Saturday, we prepared for this day. Everyone preparing dishes, and activities for people to participate in when they come by the school.

These are a few of my classmates. Almost everyday, we do little skits to practice our conversation skills. It is hilarious, because I think that we say some of the funniest things. Chopping up the Japanese language and everything, you can still make sense of what is going on and get some humor out of it. That is my ichi-ban favourite teacher in the corner!

Library Trip!

Today, I made a trip to the library with my roommates. We all applied for library cards so we could check out books. As I am slowly being able to read again...lol everything is new and fresh and there is so much I want to read. This will be good because I can just check out books now, instead of buying them and not reading them or liking them. I checked out Kokoro by Natsume Soseki. I read it in English about 2 years ago. Now I'll check it out in Japanese!

Since the library is pretty far from where we live, we all rode bicycles. This was probably about my 3rd time riding a bike in Japan. Today reaffirmed why I probably won't be riding one often. Although they can cut down the time it takes to get somewhere, I prefer walking because these are the things I take into account:

Kobe is very hilly. Going down hills is fun, but going up is a pain.
Pedestrians and bikers usually share the same path, which doesn't allow for a smooth ride. I probably stopped about 20 times to allow people to pass. I'm usually the one glaring at bikers who are trying to ride there bike through a big crowd. Today it was me :)
You use up a lot more energy biking. The way I've been walking, my appetite has definitely increased, not to mention that everywhere I go there's is food :) But I can't imagine what it will be like after biking to and from school everyday. I know eventually I'd adjust, but just another excuse :)

Biking is cool, but I'll stick to my feet. I like being able take my time, taking in everything around me. Maybe if I get a job that is far away, I will consider it. Until then, you can see me walking up and down the streets of Kobe.

End of Golden Week

Today was the last day of Golden Week. One of my roommates and I climbed the mountain near our house. The weather is definitely warming up, which I like :) Although it will soon be unbearably hot.

After the long journey, we got some omuraisu(オムライス), which is basically an omelet with rice inside. You can definitely get creative with what you put on top, and even what's inside as well. Here is a curry omuraisu with bacon. おいしかった！I will try making this at home soon.

Nara!

On Sunday, a few of my classmates and I went to Nara! From Kobe, I think it's about an hour and a half train ride. One thing Nara is known for is deer. You can't miss them they are everywhere...lol
Nara is also known for its Buddhist shrines and temples, which are very beautiful.

This is Todai-ji(東大寺） Temple. It is the largest wooden building in the world, according to Wikipedia.

This was a very fun outing. Since it was Golden Week, there were tons of people.

Today's video pick was very hard, I was listening to Radwimps and then while deciding which video to pick, I decided to pick three of the one's that I like from them. I first heard them about 2 years ago, or maybe it was a year ago after being introduced to them by a friend. I really like the feeling the songs have, especially on the the 3rd, 4th, and 5th albums. All of these songs are from the 4th album!
